What does it take to hold an Ohio charter?
Meeting the state's Operating Standards, first to get the charter and then every year to keep it. DEW's application file starts with a short online course and builds to a compliance plan, the nonpublic school report, a statement of intent and a written nondiscrimination policy. A charter belongs to one name, one site, one owner and one set of grades, so a move or an added grade means going back to DEW.
What does the non-chartered route trade away?
Public money. A school that declines a charter on religious grounds tells its parents each year that it meets Ohio's minimum standards and sends DEW that report between July 1 and September 30; in exchange, its students give up state busing and auxiliary services and it can never cash a voucher.
What testing comes with voucher students?
Voucher students sit for Ohio's state assessments, and the Cleveland Scholarship and EdChoice both make testing a condition of renewal. Schools where scholarship students are a large majority of enrollment face broader testing requirements, so plan the testing calendar before the first scholarship check arrives.
How many schools around Cleveland use each track?
Our directory counts 181 schools on Ohio's chartered list in the five counties, while DEW's 2026-27 non-chartered list names 37 schools in the same counties, many of them small family-run academies. We show each school's status on its listing.
